The deer thrive on the peaceful location of Te Manga station and surrounding properties. The untouched hunting block is the best area of native New Zealand bush for miles around and the native tree cover and grasslands make it perfect for the deer to live in and for hunting them. Our free range hunting is outside of the hunting block and is our station. The hunting consists of bush hunting, pine forest hunting and in the early mornings and late evening it is common to see deer out on edge of the bush and forestry and in the grazing paddocks.
Hunting Block
Te Manga Hunting Safaris hunting block is mainly native bush which consists of river bed hunting, big clearings, dense and open woods, a few areas of pines and grass land. When it was ring fenced years ago wild deer were trapped in there, hence all the deer in there are completely wild except for a few genetic red stags we released. The wild fallow blood lines were already carrying some magnificent heads. It is very challenging hunting that really gets the blood running. The stream that flows though makes for excellent stalking with good clearings all the way. Our Hunting is truly unique, in that we do not even know what’s in there, just that it will be a great trophy. So it is just as exciting for us, as it is for our hunters. The block is a great place, where it feels like you could be any where else in the New Zealand mountains. It is truly an amazing place to hunt during the roar with stags and bucks roaring all around you!
Free Range
The free range hunting on our station holds some very good hunting. The hunting consists of bush hunting, pine forest hunting and in the early mornings and late evening it is common to see deer out on edge of the bush and forestry and in the grazing paddocks. For instants a trophy Fallow buck was taken in the free range area scoring 245 5/8 Douglas Score which is truly a monster trophy Fallow buck. The red stags can get as big as 16-points. From 8 to 12 point stags seem to be quite common though. There is a very high number of deer in the free range hunting area and there are many opportunities to get a great deer for the freezer or wall.
